Beautiful Homes of Natchez: Longwood

Longwood, also known as Nutt's Folly, is a historic antebellum octagonal mansion.  It is the largest octagonal house in the United States. (Did you know antebellum means built before the Civil War?)

Longwood, in it's unfinished state, illustrates the impact of the Civil War on the economy of the South. War called the Yankee artisans home, leaving behind their tools, and their paint brushes, never to be brought to completion.  The family moved into the basement,"a temporary habitat," where, now many of their furnishings are displayed. No pictures of the family furnishings were allowed.

The dome and a sky light, to bring light into the basement of the home.

Crates used to send clothing and other article to Miss Julie Nutt, one of the daughters, An old bath tub.

A peak into the upstairs. Barrels of all types.

The front porch and view from there. The guide is the lady in the picture on the left.  She was not a good tour guide.

The carriage house.

This house was extremely interesting as you could the stages of construction on the house.
Now, on are way to the Rosalie built in 1820.
