After visiting Melrose, we had lunch at the Carriage Restaurant, which is housed on the grounds of the Stanton Home and has been operating since 1946 but build in the 1890's. We had a delicious lunch in a beautiful atmosphere and superb service.
Our next tour was right here. The Stanton House. No pictures were allowed in the house so this is the only picture I have.
This home was built by Frederick Stanton and was the house of his dreams. It is situated on an entire block of Natchez, MS and was build in 1858. Frederick was new money and his house was a showplace. To show the people of Natchez his wealth.
In 1932 there were 40-odd fine old homes in some state of repair or restoration. Even in the midst of the Depression, the ladies of the of the Pilgrimage Garden Club found that visitors were still willing to pay a fee to see them. Today Pilgrimage is a bustling tourism destination, thanks to these enterprising women of vision. Stanton Hall stands as a monument to that vision, and is the headquarters of the Garden Club.
