Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

So that we did not get overloaded on beautiful homes, as if that could happen to me.  We decided to visit the  Grand Village of the Natchez Indians on Friday.
Between 1682 and 1729, the Natchez people used the village as their main ceremonial center.  The three mounds were used for major religious and political ceremonies.

On the top of the B Mound was build the home of the Great Sun.

During the 1700's, French settlers began to explore the region and establish settlements that gradually encroached on the Natchez territory.  Though relations were peaceful at first, the two groups competed for resources and did not understand each other's cultures.  Several episodes of violence in 1716 and 1723 created tension although the Natchez made land concessions to the French. By 1730 the French drove the Natchez out of the area.

Beautiful grounds and lots of picnic tables and benches for enjoying a lovely day.
