New Orleans: Day Four

Bob and I drove to the Garden District.  We did not have a map.  So it was an adventure.

This area was originally developed between 1832 to 1900.  It may be one of the best preserved collection of historical southern mansions in the United States.  The 19th century origins of the Garden District illustrate wealthy newcomers building opulent structures based upon the prosperity of New Orleans in that era.  Here are a few of the beautiful homes we saw.

Along St. Charles Avenue, the main street in the garden district, the oldest continuously operating street railroad system in the world runs. It has no air conditioning.and no way to turn around.  When it gets to the end of the line, the passengers must exit, while the conductor turns the seats around, then the passengers can reboard.

There is another streetcar in New Orleans you can ride today, with air conditioning and it can turn around, not as much fun.
