Port Arthur & Beaumont

When we get into a new city we like to look around the town.  We always find Walmart  and check out to see if there is a Sam's Club or Costco.  We also try to find interesting places to see and good places to eat.  Tuesday night we decided to go into Port Arthur for dinner.  We were imagining a beach community, with small restaurants and little places to shop.  Well, we drove and drove and drove and drove.  We saw older interesting homes, guinea pigs for sell , levies, and cacti......   I know, I know, I don't know what they are either, but they were the highlight of our trip to Port Arthur.

The next day, we decided to explore the city of Beaumont hoping for a more exciting town.  We started off at the Fire Museum.  We didn't plan to go there but this is what we saw.... the biggest fire hydrant that you ever would see.  Plus it was painted the color of a dalmatian???

It also had a memorial for the fire fighters lost in 9-11. It was an eternal flame and the names of the 343 fire fighters who were lost.

So it peeked our interest and being the museum was free.

It was interesting.  It had old engines, from 1917 and the 1920's.

There were hooks and ladders....

An old water pump wagon..

They had patches from other fire departments all around the museum.

Upstairs there was an interactive children exhibit.  It had a house for the children to practice getting out when there is a fire.

There were also uniforms and hats from other countries.

Most impressive, their Fire Chief is a woman:)

We went to Crockett St,, an entertainment area in Beaumont, TX.  One of the building's name was Wilson, since Heather is now a Wilson and her father in law is a developer,we had to have a pictures.

A  most eye catching building in Beaumont is the Tyrrell Memorial Library.  It was constructed at the First Baptist Church in 1903.  Twenty years after it was build, the congregation out grew the building and it was sold to Captain William Tyrrell and he donated to the city for a library.

There was so much more to see, but our time was up and we had to move on to Lafayette, LA. Maybe we'll see more on another visit.
