Bob and Chico visit the Yorktown

As I said in a previous post, Jackie and Jacki are being more selective in the sites they see with the boys.  So when they wanted to see the Yorktown, we decided to do laundry and read and let them spend the day enjoying what we would not.

Yorktown was commissioned on April 15, 1943, and participated significantly in the Pacific Offensive that began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945.

In the 1950's, Yorkstown was modified with the addition of an angled deck to better operate jet aircraft in her role as an attach carrier.  In 1958, Yorktown was designated an anti-submarine aircraft carrier, and would later earn 5 battle stars for service off Vietnam (1965-1968).  This nuclear sub is being renovated to be added to this exhibit.

The ship also recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule (December 1968).  Yorktown was decommissioned in 1970 and placed in reserve, and in 1975, was towed from Bayonne. NJ to Charleston to become the centerpiece of Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.

This is the Command Center of the ship.

This is where the ship is controlled.

This shows where the planes are stored under the deck.  Notice that these planes' wings and turned up so the plane fits and can be moved up to the deck by an elevator.

This show what is under the flight deck, where the planes above are stored.

This helicopter is one that Chico flew in during the Viet Nam war.

Finally, this is a view from the deck of the Yorktown.

Thanks Chico for providing the pictures, Bob got about 2.  It seems Bob and Chico had a good time with out us.  Imagine that.
