Carriage Ride in Charleston

On our first day in Charleston we took a carriage ride around the city.

We passed the city market.

That where you can buy Sweetgrass baskets.  Sweetgrass basket making has been part of the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant communities for more than 300 years.  Brought to the area by slaves who came from West Africa, basketmaking is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation.Today, it is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States.

We turned toward town. Ahead is St. Michael's Episcopal church, on the site of the first Anglican church south of Virginia in 1680.

The courthouse.

Still some cobblestone streets remain.

We saw a lot of the houses of Charleston in their various styles.  These first ones are called the Rainbow Houses.

I will just show these homes with no comments.  Enjoy.

We finished our day with dinner at a very good Italian restaurant, Bocci's.

Retirement is tough but someone has to do it.
