Duke University

Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, NC.  Founded by Methodists and Quakers in the present day town of Trinity in 1838 the school moved to Durham in 1892.  In 1924, tobacco and electric power industrialist James B Duke established The Duke Endowment, at which time the institution  changed is name to honor his deceased father Washington Duke.

The university has "historical formal, on-going ties" with the United Methodist Church, but is a nonsectarian and independent institution.  Duke University Chapel is located in the center of the campus.  Constructed from 1930 and 1932, it seats 1,800 people and stands 210 feet tall.  It is built in the Collegiate Gothic Style, characterized by large stones, pointed arches, and ribbed  vault.

On one side of the quad was the student union.

The library across from the Union looked almost identical.

At the end of the quad was the auditorium.

The residential halls were amazing also and there was a Wilson Hall.

Our daughter Heather, married into the Wilson family, so we had to show there was a Wilson Hall.

There are newer buildings here too.  This is the Music Hall.

Another newer building,

lots of construction. Good to know that the University continues to grow.
