Occoneechee Speedway was one of the first two NASCAR tracks to open and is the only track remaining from the inaugural 1949 season. The site is now heavily forested in 40 year old pines and sycamores. Which is ideal for walking. Visible still are the grandstands.
Each turn was labeled. This is Turn 1, and this is Turn 2.
In the picture of Turn 2 you can see the banking that goes to the river.
The track was dirt and had loose stones that easily got in our shoes.
This is turn 3 and 4. But more important to me, it signalled we had walked half way on this 1 mile track.
The Grandstands above and the Starter Stand below.
It has been in the 100's so we were both sweating and dripping when we finished our walk.
An unpleasant subject. For those of you who follow our blog, you know we have been having refrigerator problems. Well today, we stopped our denial and call another refrigerator repairman in Chapel Hills. Of course he couldn't come till Monday. So we are still without a refrigerator:(
