Fort Knox in Prospect, Maine

Fort Knox, now Fort Knox State Park, Maine was built from 1844-1869.  It is  located on the western bank of the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine, about 5 miles from the mouth of the river. It was the first fort in Maine built of granite(instead of wood).  It is named after Henry Knox the first US Secretary of War, who at the end of his life lived not far away in Thomaston, Maine.
This areal view is not a picture I took, but I thought it gave you a better overall view of the fort.

We were able to have an interpretive walk of Fort Knot.

These slots were through which guns were stuck.

The docent told us a lot about the cannons.  I only remember that they would move forward to shoot and then move back and a door was shut so nothing could get into the fort. Bob thinks they were a 15" Rodman (?) cannons.  They also had 10" cannons.

View of Bucksport from one of the cannon holes.

This picture shows how thick the brick walls were.

Inside the fort, this was the parade grounds and the dorms for the soldiers.

Our flag. Wasn't it a beautiful day.

This is where the ammunition was kept.

The bakery.

An old ambulance was on the grounds.

A view of the Penobscot Narrows Observatory from Fort Knox.

We truly enjoyed the day.
