David's home towns, Auburn and Lewiston

When David was growing up he skied at this resort and was on the ski patrol.
This is the warming building. David grew up in Auburn.  Auburn and Lewiston are sister cities seperated by the river.

One of the ski runs.

The Knight House 1796.  Oldest frame house at Goff's Corners Lewiston Falls and Auburn Village Corp.

Downing Shoe Shop 1790.

The falls on the Androscoggin River. Auburn and Lewiston were mill towns. Mills were built to operate by water power from the falls on the Androscoggin River and Little Androscoggin River. In 1835, the factory system of shoe manufacture originated at Auburn.  Other firms manufactured cotton and woolen textiles, carriages, iron goods, bricks and furniture.

The power company.

Shoe and Bates Woolen Mill buildings still stand but no manufacturing is done here anymore.

Basilica of St Peter and Paul.

We could not get into the upstairs church, but the basement chapel was open and is pictured below.

We also went to the town of Bethel.  This is the home of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, who served under President Abraham Lincoln.

We have the best tour guides in the state of Maine.
